THE TURNOUT

Our annual grant cycle

Galesburg Community Foundation awards grants to nonprofits serving our region through our annual grant cycle, The Turnout. Grants for The Turnout come from the Community Foundation’s unrestricted Impact Fund and Field of Interest Funds along with contributions from generous community donors who hold Donor Advised Funds at the Community Foundation.

Turnout grants are awarded in the areas of arts, culture, and community enhancement; health and human services; education and workforce development; and nonprofit capacity, sustainability, and reinvention.

The Turnout application

The Turnout is open to 501(c)(3) nonprofit or public charities, schools, churches, and government agencies serving residents of Knox and Warren Counties. Through The Turnout, funders have the opportunity to learn about the work of local nonprofits and support the causes they care about.

“We believe EVERY child deserves a voice in court and we are thrilled to have the backing of Galesburg Community Foundation with a grant from The Turnout.”

– Kelly Radeke, Executive Director, Court Appointed Special Advocates for Children of West Central Illinois

The Turnout

Why is it called The Turnout?

A turnout is a mechanical railroad installation that enables trains to be guided from one track to another without momentum lost. Turnouts are sometimes straight and sometimes curve to the right or to the left. Just as in life, sometimes there is a path straight forward and sometimes there is a curve thrown our way. When all the pieces of the turnout work together, the train stays on track, with no momentum lost to reach its final destination.

Similar to a turnout, philanthropy must have many moving parts to make it work well. Nonprofits without donors and donors without causes can’t make much impact. When we work together, the impact is greater.
