MISSION IMPACT INVESTING

Creating measurable social impact

Galesburg Community Foundation is a mission-driven organization. We use every tool at our disposal to achieve our mission of improving the quality and health of our communities in Knox and Warren counties. We bring people together so that we can achieve more collectively.

One approach we use to meet our mission is mission impact investing. Using this strategy, we reallocate resources from our investment portfolio and make local investments that generate both a measurable social impact and financial return.

Our largest investment to date is the Galesburg Branch of River Bend Food Bank. The Community Foundation purchased and renovated the property at the corner of Main and Henderson streets in Galesburg. We lease the building to the Food Bank, creating a steady, predictable financial return that we use for grantmaking.

Greater access to food

The Galesburg Branch provides greater access to more nutritious, perishable foods for more than 50 food pantries in the Food Bank’s network that previously spent time traveling to the organization’s Davenport, Iowa, location to pick up food to distribute. Serving not only the immediate surrounding service area of Knox and Warren Counties, the Galesburg Branch will provide food to hunger-relief partners in Fulton, Hancock, Henderson, Henry, McDonough, and Stark Counties.

“Some of the highest areas of food insecurity in our region are in the rural communities that are served by the Galesburg Branch. Because of this partnership with Galesburg Community Foundation, and through the generous support of the city and its community members, children and adults in eight counties have more convenient and more consistent access to fresh, healthy foods.
