At Galesburg Community Foundation, we believe that philanthropy is for everyone. Every donor we work with has their own individual passions but shares a common goal of wanting to support their passions. A benefit of working with the Community Foundation is our ability to maintain anonymity if that is important to the donor. The Joy Fund is a perfect example of how an anonymous fund can make a meaningful impact.
Established in 2013, The Joy Fund was born from a deep understanding of the barriers many young people face when trying to engage with the arts. “Art supplies can be expensive, and not everyone has access to transportation to get to stores,” the anonymous donor shared. “I wanted to ensure that those who have the desire to explore their creativity could do so without financial strain. “Art saved me in many ways, and I want others to have that same opportunity,” they shared.
The Joy Fund provides an annual grant to the Galesburg District 205 art department for the benefit of five art students chosen by their art teachers to be one of the “Lucky 5.” Through a partnership with Blick Art Materials, the “Lucky 5” get to shop the catalog for supplies and materials which are used to create pieces that are displayed at an annual exhibit at Galesburg Community Art Center
The donor described the joy they feel when seeing the impact of their contributions. “I want the kids to know that someone cares about their creativity and their potential,” they said. “Art can be a lifeline, and I hope this fund helps them find their voice.”
By remaining anonymous, the donor aims to shift the focus to the young artists and encourage them to explore their interests. “It’s not about me,” they emphasized. “It’s about the students and creating a space for them to express themselves.
“The work of The Joy Fund is a powerful example of using a fund at the Community Foundation to support something specific. The Community Foundation a great place to think through what is important to you,” commented Sarah Grant, Director of Development.
“Art should be about experimentation, not pressure. It’s about finding joy,” shared the donor.
